Snickers Update – Web Site Pulled

6 February 2007 by Cord Silverstein, 2 Comments

Thanks for stopping by! Hey, why don't you do what all the cool kids are doing and subscribe to my RSS feed? You know you want to, so go ahead, be bad, be very very bad... :) Thanks.

SnickersThere has been some interesting discussions here on a previous post of mine discussing the two guys kissing and chest hair pulling Snickers commercial. When launched the commercial drove users to the web site afterthekiss.com. Though today if you try out that URL, you will just be redirected to the Snickers site.

AdRants has a good write up on this where they say,

“While we liked this spot purely for its shock value, there’s a faintly high probability this will have a very real negative affect on sales. Can you imagine the looks one will now receive from the checkout clerk when they buy a Snickers bar? That’s just way too much snickering for most people to take and there’s plenty of other perfectly good candy choices with far less embarrassment attached to them.”

Though I do hear that the follow-up commercial to this will be video of everyone in the marketing department of Snickers pulling out their own chest hair after seeing their sales drop from their commercial being aired on the SuperBowl.

    Cord

You missed the most important part of what Steve wrote:

“Beware all you hipster creatives who think your ivory tower, insider coolness will be welcomed by all. Hardly. Remember, there’s a whole lot more people living outside your world that in.”

    and then…

“Somewhere along the line, this industry forgot that Super Bowl ads still need to accomplish what advertising is meant to do: sell. It’s perfectly fine for advertising to go for the laugh, the tear, the shudder but it still has to sell or else it’s all a pointless waste of money. It’s too bad that many in the industry creating ads have forgotten that and have put too much effort into the creation of entertainment at the expense of advertising primary function: to aid in the movement of product from manufacturer to consumer.”

To me, those two comments combined say it all. Young hipsters, thinking everyone thinks like them. Everyone will ‘get it’ and think that the ad was a riot and that these two guys (a favorite target of ridicule) are idiots. And because of that, we’ll sell more Snickers bars. Those that have a problem with the ad are like the guys in the ad. Morons. And/or homophobic.

Would you be interested in writing for The Neave Online Publication? I love your writing style and I feel like you would fit in perfectly with the other writers.
