Feedburner Help Needed
I was hoping for some help or opinions on Feedburner stats. Recently, it seems that the number of subscribers I have rise and fall rapidly which does not make a lot of sense to me. For example, on Sunday Feedburner listed this blog as having 173 subscribers. When I woke up Monday morning that number dropped to 138. Are you telling me that between Sunday and Monday 35 people unsubscribed to my feed? Seems a bit far fetched to me. What do you think? Your input is greatly appreciated.
UPDATE: Tuesday morning, the number has jumped to 154 subscribers. This is like watching a volatile stock on the Nasdaq.

FeedBurner sounds like a Phen Phen lose weight pill so I wouldn’t put too much stock into sites like this. If anything your site increased subscribership and will have an upward trend for a while.
Same is the case with me too…it keeps on changing each day…
Hi Cord – It’s based on the polling. Some folks turn off their computers on the weekends, for example, so they don’t show up in the polling.
Check out this topic for an overview – http://forums.feedburner.com/viewtopic.php?t=1349
cord,
hi this is don from feedburner.
that’s very normal behavior for “subscription” data. you should read the following three posts as they explain what we track, etc. and, they show how we offer additional data that helps explain engagement – unique reach, pageviews, and clicks.
here are the the posts:
(1) peek inside techcrunch’s numbers
“Due to the way feed-reading tools behave, it is completely normal for this number to fluctuate. For example, some people who read TechCrunch access the feed using a desktop feed reader such as NetNewsWire and these folks may turn off their computers on the weekends. During that time, the TechCrunch feed isn’t being polled and the subscriber isn’t being counted, which is reported accordingly. Take a look at the TechCrunch subscriber data over the last 30 days to see how weekend dips are part of a regular trend, but generally do not affect the upward direction of the chart over time.”
(2) 360 degree view of audience engagement
(3) feedburner’s view of the feed market
let me know if you have any questions, etc.
thanks for being a customer…

I just recently installed the Feedburner Stats widget and since have noticed my subscription numbers grow by about 8 people a day. Not sure if that’s accurate, but I’ll take it. If there’s a big drop, then I’ll know why.
Don,
Thank you very much for stopping by and including the links, makes much more sense.
Thanks for everyone else’s comments.
There is actually something else I noticed that caused this.
Bloglines wasn’t being counted for part of a day on a number of blogs, but at the time it didn’t seem to be affecting Techcrunch, so I put it down to a server issue.
Also around Feb 24th there seems to have been a change in the way Firefox Live Bookmarks are being reported
