[...] It’s not just happening in the West, and it’s not just harrasment by anonymous posters you know. (No) Thanks to one of the major newspapers in Malaysia, two prominent bloggers of this country celebrate the early months of 2007 (read here and here) with a libel lawsuit that started the whole bloggers-are-bad brouhaha and sorry politicians stating silly facts about bloggers that aren’t so factual (like “80% of unemployed Malaysia bloggers are women“).
[...] Kathy Sierra was cyber-bullied to the point that she felt unsafe and she canceled a speaking engagement. “This is truly ugly,” wrote Susan A. Kitchens. She posted about her fears in her blog and what she knew about the harassers. This incident sparked debate across the blogosphere and beyond about the issues of harassment, sexism, anonymity, vigilantism, free speech, and community building. Dan York collected other’s blog posts about it as did Bruno Giussani. “At first, I really had a hard time believing this was real and initially thought it might be some kind of an early April fools joke, but it definitely seems to be on the level,” says the Marketing Hipster.
Gentleman,

It's definitely a shame, but this is far from the first time this has happened and it will definitely not be the last.

distressing to say the least, Cord - I can't quite connect all the dots which is just one reason I'm not a detective. My hunch is someone will....the world becomes a smaller place in this space - as vast as that can be. It's even a bit creepy commenting to your post here. A totally wrong feeling for anyone to experience. Share as you deem fit.

This sickens me.

So sad.

But we all take a risk in exposing ourselves online. Still, it burdens me to see someone be attacked so awfully.

Rob,

Great comment and I could not agree more. What even concerns me more is that Chris Locke and others do not seem to be taking this very seriously at all. At least that was my impression from his post.

The one item that kind of annoys me a bit is the response Scoble took, by taking some time off from blogging. It kind of reminds me of terrorism in a way. If you stop what you have been doing than the scumbags win.

Thanks for as always your great comments.

Cord -

Technorati is on fire with conversations about this. I've only heard about this recently but have been reading any/all posts I can find on what's happened/happening.

This strikes a personal nerve for me, as a good friend in high school was brutally raped and murdered. This type of trivial objectification of women and sickening sexually laced threats is disgusting. It literally made me sick to read the things said about her and to see the images of her that were posted.

These actions towards women cannot be tolerated.

This is a sad day in blogging history and the folks who posted these threats directed towards Kathy should be, at the very least, outed and forever shunned by their respective professional communities as well as the blogging community.
