Circuit City Petition to Stop the Firings

30 March 2007 by Cord Silverstein, 10 Comments

Thanks for stopping by! Hey, why don't you do what all the cool kids are doing and subscribe to my RSS feed? You know you want to, so go ahead, be bad, be very very bad... :) Thanks.

UPDATE: Friday 10:50 AM. I am sorry folks, but the petition site I chose is having all kinds of technical problems so I have switched it to a new site. If you have already signed up for the petition can you do me a favor and click the link again below and sign the new petition? I am sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you!

In response to my earlier post, that Circuit City has announced that they are laying off 3,900 of their best employees just to hire less experienced ones, I have created an online petition to try to get Circuit City’s attention before they go through with this. I want to ask everyone if they would not mind to go and sign the online petition. We will be sending it to Philip J. Schoonover, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Circuit City.

I am also posting below an image with a link to the petition site. Any of my fellow bloggers that would like to take the image and post it on their own site, please absolutely feel free to do so. If you do not know how to upload images to your own site, I am supplying the code that all you need to do is copy and paste it and drop it on your blog. I appreciate your help very much. It is time that companies realize that they cannot get away with things like this and expect us to continue to give them our money.

CC Petition

I know my graphics abilities are limited so if anyone wants to create a better image, please feel free. For anyone who just wants the code please just copy and paste below:

I’m going to take the opposite view here Cord since I’m a free market guy. I understand businesses have to make a profit and they have to please their shareholders. And whatever they have to do to do that is just the nature of the beast we call capitalism.

If Circuit City is really hiring less experienced and less knowledgeable people, then their customer base should start shopping someplace else if they’re really interested in smart salespeople. If that happens, sales will go down and Circuit City will be forced to either hire smarter people or cut costs somewhere else.

I don’t know all of Circuit City’s reasons for this action. Maybe they’re in financial trouble and need to trim costs. And maybe the sales force is overpaid. I don’t know what an average electronics sales person makes, but I did work in retail and have a pretty good idea of what the market says they’re worth. I mean, it’s not like these people are PHDs.

    Anyway, that’s my take.

    Mike,

Thanks for the comment and I agree with many of your points. Especially the one about people will not shop their anymore. I understand they are running a business, but cutting your most experienced work force is short term thinking. My goal for posting these articles and the petition is to make people aware of this news so as you said, they can decide whether they want to shop there or not.

I think my underlying view on all this is for too long businesses and corporations have been able to hide their dirty laundry under the rug and get away with things that we as people would be accountable for. It is time that businesses are held to the same accountability as you and I are.

Thank you for your opinion and I hope to see you back here soon.

    John,

I am so sorry to hear about the terrible and forgivable way you were laid off by a company you gave 12 years of your life to. If there is anything that I or this community can do to help you find a new job, please let me know. Feel free to send me an email at cord.silverstein at gmail.com. I wish you the best of luck.

I’ve got about $500 in electronics purchases to make when I get a few hours time. There’s a Circuit City about three blocks or so from where I live; it’s their Union Square, New York City Store.

I won’t be spending ANY of that money at Circuit City. Not now. Not Ever.

    Never.

GOP – I use to live about 4 blocks from the CC in Union Square. Great decision to spend your money somewhere else. Thanks for the comment!

It’s nice that we have a voice, but you should read some of the pure hatred being spewed at the remaining CC employees. 40,000 people do not deserve to be shit on either.

Good Luck with the petition, but you know that the decision was made months ago by the Board and whoever else.

Tori – Thanks for the comment and I agree with you that we are not going to stop CC. My hope is to educate CC buyers and to hold the company accountable by hopefully having buyers take their money elsewhere.
