I felt kind of obligated to post this follow up after all the discussions and comments that have come from the this original post as well as a response I posted after Seth Godin jumped into the discussions. Below is Paul Potts semi-final performance. Take a look and I will comment after the video.
My thoughts: Again as everyone can agree on, Paul has an amazing voice. I think, at least for me, they took a little away from the great experience of hearing his voice with all the BS effects, but that is just me. One of the things that I said during my initial post was that what made his initial performance incredible was not only his voice, but who he was as a person. That underdog, the guy who comes out of nowhere to accomplish things that he nor anyone else could of imagined. That’s a story and I just hope they don’t try to change who he is because it would take away from the impact he is having on the public.
What do you think? You think I could get Seth, oh I am sorry, Mr. Godin to disagree with me twice in one week? Woo, I am starting to feel a little weak in the knees..

You’re right, Cord. He’s just got an incredibly powerful voice that reaches out and holds you. It’s remarkable. I agree the production was disappointing, the visuals didn’t disturb me. I felt the music was too loud, and he had to compete with it. But overall, yeah….it’s definitely just cool to see that sort of everyday Joe go after it. I hope he can ride that star all the way to the top.
He’s all set, Cord. No way do the producers quit the underdog angle - they can’t. I echo John - this is a voice for the ages, it thrills, it chills and, at least for the woman judge, it causes spills. I’m no Mr. Godin (haven’t read his reaction) - but I’m beginning to have some questions. Maybe they get answered and maybe they don’t - mostly I’m curious. Who’s his teacher? how long has he trained? where has he previously performed? His voice feels far too polished and professional to have been just discovered. This is a man with a great coach - more power to him. I don’t watch any of the “Idol” or “you be a star” competition shows - though I did get caught up in that dancing with the stars thing
What would be very hip is for opera to spread to the masses via Paul Potts. Pavarotti touched on it. But this guy is a wee bit different. At any rate, thanks for bringing the whole phenomenon to my consciousness.
