NBC Dateline Producer Gets Owned

5 August 2007 by Cord Silverstein, 6 Comments

Thanks for stopping by! Hey, why don't you do what all the cool kids are doing and subscribe to my RSS feed? You know you want to, so go ahead, be bad, be very very bad... :) Thanks.

If you are not familiar, there is a big conference every year called Defcon. This is a conference of hackers, security experts, etc. A NBC Dateline producer named Michelle Madigan tried to sneak into the conference as a programmer and had a hidden camera where she wanted to film hackers hacking I guess. Anyhow, Ms. Madigan was discovered and the conference organizers asked her if she would like a press pass which she declined. I don’t know what she was thinking, but she was outed in the middle of the conference and then literally chased out of the convention. You can see the whole video below. Wouldn’t you like to be a fly on the wall when Ms. Madigan meets with her boss on Monday?

I believe the technical term is “oops”

NBC must have some brilliant minds there. A conference centered around the collaboration of experts and over-the-line enthusiasts and they’re going to try to sneak in?

Declining the press pass was the most brilliant piece of it all.

I love it! The irony and hypocrisy of hackers ousting someone who sneaked their way into their convention? It’s beautiful. Of course she turned down the press pass. All she’s gonna get with a press pass is a bunch of boring talking points kerflooey.

The girl will probably get promoted. I mean, we’re talking NBC here. They like to bust online sex predators. They’re loving this stuff and all the publicity.

Dateline really screwed up here, but I can’t help thinking that OSCON organizers handled it poorly and the video reflects badly on the attendees.

Being a proud nerd myself and with a lot of sympathy for hackers in general, it’s still not fun to watch a pack of guys chase a woman to her car and call her a bitch.

Finally, even though Dateline is crap, it also makes me sad to see journalists treated like this. So much for the Fourth Estate.

Treated like what, she went to a hackers convention acting like a hacker, the only reason a reporter would go through so much trouble at hiding the fact that they are a reporter is if they are trying to dig up dirt.

Also the people that “escorted” her out were docile compared to every paparazi I’ve seen.
