Web 3.0 by Eric Schmidt

8 August 2007 by Cord Silverstein, 8 Comments

Thanks for stopping by! Hey, why don't you do what all the cool kids are doing and subscribe to my RSS feed? You know you want to, so go ahead, be bad, be very very bad... :) Thanks.

CEO of Google Eric Schmidt was recently asked at the Seoul Digital Forum what his thoughts were on Web 2.0 and now Web 3.0… Wow, we are already getting into Web 3.0? I didn’t think we were even close to finishing with Web 2.0. His answer is interesting, he compares Web 2.0 to Ajax and likens Web 3.0 to small apps interconnecting with each through multiple mediums and the data is in the “clouds”.

It was a pretty good answer, but if I could throw my two cents in. I think what Web 2.0 has not completed yet and what Web 3.0 should take to a whole new stratosphere is all about the level of control.

The limitless control that users will have on how and what they do on the web. To me that is what this all about. It is me being able to shop the way I want to shop and not how some web developer thinks I want to shop. It is being able to read news, watch videos, communicate with others when and how I want to do it. It is about officially slamming the door on companies and web sites that make assumptions on what their clients and customers want instead of just actually asking them and even more importantly, listening to their answers.

What do you think? What’s Web 2.0 and 3.0 to you? If you want to watch Eric Schmidt’s answer, the video is below.

    Cord,

I think we are aways off from really defining web 3.0 since there is so much more adaptation that people need to do for web 2.0. Business’ and common people are just realizing the potential of all the collaboration that can be done on the new web. It will be a constant evolution.

I think Web 3.0 leans more to a technical state of the web where users and business will take a while to understand and find ways to leverage it.

    Just my quick 2 cents

Wow. I had just completed a post on a group blog. I’m not a technology guy, but my point was that closed off systems like Facebook need to open up more. Schmidt doesn’t say the same thing, but the technology that he talks about seems to offer a solution.

And enjoy your vacation! Saw that on Facebook.

    Hi,

So we are moving from Web 2.0 to Web 3.0 or we have already moved while most webmasters are stuck on Web 1.0 and even don’t know what Web 2.0 is.

It becomes harder to keep yourself updated.

    Best regards,
    Vahid

Ya know, the web is like razor blades. Every couple of years a major razor company will come out with a new model, edition, product – whatever it’s called. And they just add another blade. First it was one, then two, then three, then four…and now we have five blade razors. Each promising to be the best thing out there.

    Tract 2. Mach3. Web 2.0. Web 3.0. Same thing.

Yeah web 3.0 is still a bit too early.

Web 3.0 is a bit off but then someone had to be the first person to say web 3.0 so good job Mr. reporter.
